Year 6

Welcome to Year Six!

We are really looking forward to the year ahead with you all!

We hope you all had a great summer and are happy to be back at Sacred Heart. We have a busy and exciting term ahead of us.

Over the term, the children will participate in whole class reading and writing sessions throughout the week. Our first class novel will be ‘The 1,000-Year-Old Boy’ which links to our topic work. Spelling lessons will continue, and children will be tested weekly on the focus words for that week.

Maths lessons will follow the Year 6 curriculum and include focused arithmetic sessions, as well as TT Rockstar’s practice.

Our main topic is ‘Leaving a Legacy’. Within this, Year 6 will be learning about ‘Invaders’ (the Viking takeover) and later about World War Two. You are going to love these topics! In Science we will look at ‘Classifying Living Things’ and ‘Healthy Bodies’.

Homework

There is an expectation that children will read at home daily, either with an adult or independently. We encourage children to choose quality books that will help develop their vocabulary and comprehension rather than ‘easy reads’. Children are expected to record their daily reading in their reading diaries – these should be in school every day and will be periodically checked by the class teacher.

All children have their login details for TT Rockstars. They should continue to improve their rapid recall of multiplication facts using this. Quick recall of times tables is integral to the children’s arithmetic success this year. Year 6 adults will be frequently checking how often and for how long children are playing.

Further classroom Information

Children are to come into school on their PE day in their PE kit. Our current PE day is a Thursday so please wear a full PE kit, including trainers, on Thursdays. Please also ensure that children always have a spare set of shoes in school (wellies are fine) as they will be playing on the field still during the winter months. These spare shoes should be different from their PE shoes.

Please ensure children come to school each day with a clear water bottle so they keep hydrated. They are welcome to refill this throughout the day.

We will, as always, do our best to ensure that the children have a happy, productive and successful year. We are confident that they will.

Please email any questions/queries to schooloffice@sacredheart.peterborough.sch.uk

These can then be forwarded to us, and we can reply/make a phone call if needed.

Thank you for your continued support – we are very much looking forward to the year ahead.

Mrs Matsutani and the Year Six Team.
