Year 5

Welcome to Year Five! I’m looking forward to teaching you again and to meeting some new faces!

Hi everyone, I hope you all had a good summer. I know things may have been somewhat different due to the current situation but I hope you all managed to have a rest 😊

This term we will be working on some targeted areas that we need to, in order to catch-up a little as well as starting lots of new learning.

Over the term, the children will participate in class reading sessions.

Weekly spelling sessions will continue.

Maths lessons will follow the revised Year 5 curriculum and include focused arithmetic sessions as well as TT Rockstars practise.

In school our main topic is ‘Crime and Punishment’. Within this, Year 5 will be learning about ‘Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots’ and later on ‘The Black Death’. I’m really looking forward to these topics and have had fun looking at the content already.

There is an expectation that children will read at home daily either with an adult or independently. At the moment children are reading in school but not necessarily with an adult. Due to the current situation we are currently not using reading logs so please encourage your child to still keep up with their reading.

This year there will be no weekly spelling homework. I will however be sending home the Year5/6 common exception words for children to practise and a list of spelling patterns we will cover. This enables children to continue to revise the spellings we are learning in school. There will be a half-termly test of common exception words and these will be sent home.

All children have their login details for TT Rockstars. They should continue to improve their rapid recall of multiplication facts using this. I will be awarding prizes for those who I can see are interacting with TT Rockstars as fast recall of multiplication facts is integral for some of the work we will soon be doing.

Further classroom Information

At the moment we are asking children to come in to school on their PE day in their PE kit. We will update this when necessary. Our current PE day is a Monday so please wear a full PE kit including trainers on Mondays.

Please ensure children come to school each day with a water bottle so they keep hydrated. They are welcome to refill this throughout the day.

We will, as always, work our hardest to ensure that the children have a happy, productive and successful Year 5 which we are sure they will.

As we are not ‘meeting’ at the current time, please email any questions/ queries to These can then be forwarded to us and we can reply/ make a phone call if needed.

Thank you for your continued support.

Miss Hayes and the Year Five Team.
