Spring term in Year 3
We have an exciting and busy term ahead of us.
In English we will be working on our compositional writing including organising ideas into paragraphs. We will link our writing to our theme work writing non-fiction texts using features such as headings and sub headings.
In Maths we will be continuing to work on multiplication and division then cover money, statistics, length and perimeter and fractions.
Our topics in RE will be ‘Being a Christian’ and ‘Called to change’ which focusses on Reconciliation. We will be learning about the commandments we have been given and how we try to live in the way that God wants us to. We will look at the parable of the Good Samaritan and make links with everyday life as well as Jesus’ message in the story.
In Science during the first half of the Spring term, we will be learning about Light and Shadows. We will be investigating how we need light in order to see things and how light is reflected from surfaces. We will also learn that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object. After half-term we will focus on Plants with the topic ‘How does your garden grow?’
Throughout the school our main topic for the first half-term will continue to be our History focused ‘Through the Ages’ and the focus for Year 3 will be on the Ancient Greeks. We are really looking forward to learning about how people lived during these times and the changes that took place and how they impacted our lives today. We will be reading various Greek myths in Reading lessons and producing Art and DT linked to the Ancient Greeks. In the second half of the Spring term our topic will be ‘Many Worlds, One Planet’ and Year 3’s topic will be ‘Africa’. This is a geography focused topic and as well as learning about geographical features of Africa and developing geography skills we will do some exciting work on African culture including singing African songs and producing some African inspired batik work.
We will continue to have a spelling test on Friday and the children will be given their new spellings on the Monday before. Please make sure your child practises their spellings every day. Children will be bringing reading books home and it is still really important that the children are reading every day. We will be logging children’s reading in school and we expect to see reading recorded in their reading journals 5 times a week. Reading journals will be checked on a Monday morning and if your child hasn’t read at home they will read during morning break time. The times tables expectations for year 3 are the 2s, 10s, 5s, 3s, 4s and 8s. Each child has a log on to TT Rock stars to practise the multiplication and division facts. Please ensure your child spends 5 to 10 minutes every school day making sure they are increasing their times tables fluency.
Our PE day is Tuesday. On these days, we are asking the children to come into school in their full PE kit, including trainers. As the days at the beginning of term are likely to be cold, please can you make sure your child has suitable outdoor clothing (trainers, jacket, jogging bottoms / trousers).
Please can all children make sure they have a water bottle with them each day; they are welcome to fill their bottle up throughout the day at school.
The Year Three team will be working hard to ensure the children have a happy, productive and successful term. If you have any questions, please email these to firstname.lastname@example.org and these will be forwarded to us and we will get back to you.
Thank you for your continued support.
