Year 3

Summer term in Year 3 - We have a busy term ahead of us!

In English during the first few weeks of term we will be finishing ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes.  The children will be working on their reading skills of summarising, inferring, retrieval and vocabulary.  We will then be moving on to using reading books linked to our theme topic and writing in different genres linked to the books we are reading.

In Maths we will be finishing off our topic on mass and capacity and then moving on to fractions and money throughout this half term and then concentrate on time, shape and statistics after half term.  During registration the children will continue to do recapping activities based on topics just completed and work on practise arithmetic and test based questions.  We will continue with the ‘Year 3 times tables challenge’ every Wednesday!

Our topics in RE will be Easter and Pentecost and, after half term, The Mass. We will be continuing to develop our understanding of the Catholic faith and how we can live out the values Jesus taught us in our everyday lives. Our first topic teaches the events of Pentecost, the signs and symbols and how the Holy Spirit gives strength to us in our daily lives. Our second topic will help the children to develop their understanding of the different parts of the Mass, with a focus on communion.

In Science, during the first half of the Summer term, we will be continuing our topic ‘How does your garden grow?’ where the children have been learning about what plants need to grow. After half term we will focus on Forces and Magnets.

Throughout the school our main topic will continue to be the geography-based theme ‘Many Worlds, One Planet’ and Year 3’s topic will be ‘Africa’ and then moving on to look at Europe.  We will continue learning about geographical features of the countries and continents being studied and developing geography skills.   We will also do some exciting DT and art work linked to our theme sessions.

Homework

We will continue to have a spelling test on Friday and the children will be given their new spellings on the Monday before.  Please make sure your child practises their spellings every day.  Children will be bringing reading books home and it is still really important that the children are reading every day. We will be logging children’s reading in school and we expect to see reading recorded in their reading journals 5 times a week.  Reading journals will be checked on a Monday morning and if your child hasn’t read at home they will read during morning break time.  The times tables expectations for year 3 are the 2s, 10s, 5s, 3s, 4s and 8s.  Each child has a log on to TT Rock stars to practise the multiplication and division facts.  Please ensure your child spends 5 to 10 minutes every school day making sure they are increasing their tables fluency.

PE

Our PE day is Tuesday. On this day, we are asking the children to come into school in their full PE kit, including trainers. As the days at the beginning of term could be cold, please can you make sure your child has suitable outdoor clothing (trainers, jacket, jogging bottoms / trousers).

Water bottles

Please can all children make sure they have a water bottle with them each day; they are welcome to fill their bottle up throughout the day at school. The Year Three team will be working hard to ensure the children have a happy, productive and successful term. If you have any questions, please email these to schooloffice@sacredheart.peterborough.sch.uk and these will be forwarded to us and we will get back to you.

Thank you for your continued support.
