Times Tables

At Sacred Heart children across Key Stage One and Key Stage Two learn their times tables and regularly practise them in school. Below are the facts that the children learn in each year group:

Year 1

Children begin to count in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s.

Year 2

Children recall the multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers. They begin to use the ‘x’ and ‘÷’ symbol.

Year 3

Children continue to recall the 2X, 5X and 10X facts as well as the multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables

Year 4

Children recall all multiplication and division facts up to 12X12

Year 5 and 6

Children continue to practise their times tables facts to ensure they can do it with both speed and accuracy.

It is important that children can recall multiplication and division facts with both speed and accuracy, as knowing these number facts supports the children in other areas of their learning. By learning facts such as these, this frees up their working memory for the more challenging tasks at hand. Regular, short practice of these fact is important, so we encourage the children to practise the relevant facts for short amounts of time regularly over the week.

To help them with this, children are encouraged to use Times Tables Rock Stars as well as practising these facts in other ways too.
