At Sacred Heart, our Design and Technology curriculum intends to be inspiring, practical, meaningful and memorable.  Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. We want our children to be consider their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, to work in a cross curricular way so that the creative process has meaning and context and forms part of our carefully planned curriculum. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. 

Within Design and Technology children will learn and build on a range of practical and technical skills, testing their ideas and critiquing and evaluating both their own products and the work of others.   Our Deisgn and Techology curriculum is outlined and detailed in the Progression Map which is organised into knowledge and skills, with the aim of ensuring children build upon their learning at the appropriate stage and revisit key learning to ensure it sticks. Skills are often taught discretely, but these usually link back to the topics at the end of a series of work. 

Our pupils should be able to organise their knowledge, skills and understanding around the following learning hooks: 

• Master practical skills  

• Design, make, evaluate and improve  

• Take inspiration from design throughout history 

Our aim is that our children develop practical and technical expertise to perform everyday tasks confidently and become confident in the many characteristics of learning such as: resilience, resourcefulness, creativity and problem solving.  We also believe it is vital that our children understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook. During their time at Sacred Heart children will design and make a range of products. A good quality finish will be expected in all design and activities made appropriate to the age and ability of the child.
