Year 5

Autumn term

Welcome to Year 5. We are looking forward to a busy year ahead.

Our first unit within Theme is History. We will learning about the Anglo Saxons and finding out where the Anglo Saxons came from and when they invaded. We will also learn about their lifestyle as well as their religion.

The first RE unit will be Creation and Covenant where we will be learning about the 10 commandments, the covenant that God gave to Moses as well as sins and virtues.

Our first Science topic will be properties of materials. We will be completing many investigations to explore different properties as well as separating materials and recognising the difference between a reversible and irreversible change. Our next topic will be Earth and Space and we will be learning about the movements of the Earth, Moon, Sun and other planets as well as how we get day and night.

English Writing and Reading lessons will also be linked to our topics. We are going to be starting the year with reading Anglo Saxon Boy. We will be writing a variety of texts related to the book.

Spelling will be taught in short daily sessions working on the key Year 5 spelling objectives as well as first revising key areas from previous years.

Maths will follow the Year Five curriculum as well as extra arithmetic sessions where methods are taught and revised separately with regular assessment. Our focus this term will be place value as well as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

We want to make sure that every child in Year 5 is prepared and ready for Year six. This means some children may have extra input in handwriting or maths some afternoons to make sure they are ready.

Our PE day is Tuesday, so send your child to school in full PE kit on Tuesdays.

Homework

There is an expectation that children will read at home daily and record this in their reading diary. We check the reading diaries every Monday. Thank you for your continuing support for this.

An overview of all the spellings each half-term will be sent home the first full week in September and weekly spellings will be tested on a Friday.

All children have their login details for TT Rockstars. They should continue to improve their rapid recall of multiplication facts using this. This is so important and really impacts on how well children can use Year 5 arithmetic methods fluently and accurately. There is an expectation that each child spends 30 minutes a week – this is six 5 minute games. We will be completing a times tables test every Monday, a focus will be given the week before.

Please ensure children come to school each day with a water bottle so they keep hydrated. They are welcome to refill this throughout the day.

We will, as always, work our hardest to ensure that the children have a happy, productive and successful final term in Year Five which we are sure they will.

Please come to speak to Mrs Batchelor if you have any queries or concerns or you can email any queries to: schooloffice@sacredheart.peterborough.sch.uk. These can then be forwarded to us and we can reply/ make a phone call if needed.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs Batchelor, Mrs Braithwaite, Mrs Stringer
