Year 3

Welcome to Year Three

Autumn term

Welcome to Year Three, we are looking forward to a busy year ahead. Mrs Batchelor will be teaching Monday – Thursday and Mrs Matsutani will be teaching on a Friday.

Our first unit within Theme is Geography. We will learn about Europe and the Water cycle. We will be naming locations around Europe as well as identifying physical and human features. We will also be finding out what the water cycle is and each part of it.

The first RE unit will be Creation and Covenant, where we will be learning about the Creation story. We will be reading scripture and completing many activities around it. The next RE unit will be Prophecy and Promise, where we will be focusing on Mass and Advent.

Our first Science topic will be Animals, including humans. We will be learning about the human body, we will find out about muscles and bones and then focus on food groups and how to stay healthy. Our next Science topic will be Forces and Magnets, where we will be investigating a variety of forces and exploring what magnets are.

Our class novel for the term will be ‘The Adventures and the Cursed Castle’. This will be linked to our topic. Our reading lessons will be focused around this book.

The first book we are focusing on in English is ‘Leon and the place between’, we will be exploring the book and then writing a text to support it.

Spelling will be taught in short daily sessions working on the key Year 3 spelling objectives.

Maths will follow the Year Three curriculum as well as extra arithmetic sessions where methods are taught and revised separately with regular assessment. Our focus this term will be place value as well as addition and subtraction.

Our PE days are Tuesdays and Friday so send your child to school in full PE kit on these days

Homework

There is an expectation that children will read at home daily and record this in their reading diary. We check the reading diaries every Tuesday. Thank you for your continuing support for this.

An overview of all the spellings for each half-term will be sent home the first full week in September and weekly spellings will be tested on a Friday.

All children have  login details for TT Rockstars. Please encourage your child to use this to improve their recall of their timetables There is an expectation that each child spends 30 minutes a week – This is six 5 minute games.

Please ensure children come to school each day with a water bottle so they keep hydrated. They are welcome to refill it throughout the day.

We will, as always, work our hardest to ensure that the children have a happy, productive and successful Year Three.

Please come to speak to Mrs Batchelor if you have any queries or concerns, or you can email any queries to: schooloffice@sacredheart.peterborough.sch.uk.  These can then be forwarded to us, and we can reply/ make a phone call if needed.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs Batchelor, Mrs Matsutani, Mrs Monk and Mrs Mordi.
