Year 2
Welcome to Year Two!
English
Our English work this term will be inspired by our Theme topics ‘Our Wonderful world’ and ‘One Planet: Amazing Africa’. We will be reading books including ‘One Day on Our Blue Planet: On the Savannah’,’ Anansi and the Golden Pot’ and ‘Meerkat Mail’. We will be learning about the features of a variety of texts and then writing our own pieces. This will include a character description, our own fable and a letter.
Theme
This term we will be working on two topics, the first will be continuing ‘Our Wonderful World’ where we will be learning how to use a compass, how to read a map and what aerial photos are. For the second half of the term we will be completing the topic ‘One Planet: Amazing Africa where we will be learning all about the continent of Africa, including the geography and culture.
Science
Our first Science topic of the term is ‘Our local environment’ where we will be studying living things, habitats and the best conditions for plants to grow. We will be doing real hands on learning on our school trip! We will then move onto ‘Little MasterChef’s’ where we will be finding out what we need to survive, the importance of hygiene as well as the properties of materials used in the kitchen.
Art
The art topic this term is ‘Craft and Design: Woven Wonders’. This topic focusses on developing the ability to express opinions about art and to use creative techniques like wool wrapping and weaving. We will be practising a variety of skills including measuring, choosing materials and resilience.
Design and Technology
In DT, our topic will be ‘Cooking and Nutrition: A Balanced Diet’ and the children will be discovering the importance of a balanced diet and creating a tasty, balanced wrap to meet a design brief.
RE
Our RE unit this term is ‘To the ends of the Earth’. We will be focussing on the ascension, the Fruits of the holy spirit and the conversion of Saul.
Supporting your child at home
There is an expectation that children will read at home daily. Please ensure that you note what has been read in your child’s reading diaries and send these to school every day.
Other classroom Information
Please ensure that your child has their water bottle and book bag in school every day. Children need to wear PE clothes on Monday for Summer 1. Please make sure that it is appropriate for the weather for outside lessons.
Thank you for your continued support. I am sure we will continue to have a fantastic year and a wonderful summer term!
