Computing & E-Safety

Technology is everywhere and plays a pivotal part in all of our lives. We want to model and educate our children on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely.

We provide a broad computing curriculum which includes:

  • Computer science – The principles on information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.
  • Information Technology - using technology purposefully to create, organize, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content, use a variety of software on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs.
  • Digital literacy – the ability and skill to find, evaluate, utilise, share and create content using information technologies and the internet.

These will allow children to develop a positive attitude to technology and understand how it can benefit them both now and in their future.

One of our main, most important aims, is to ensure the safe and responsible use of technology. Our children will recognise acceptable and unacceptable behavior while using technology as well as being able to identify ways to report concerns about content and contact. We recognise that the best prevention for a lot of issues linked with technology is education and our curriculum provides these opportunities.

Implementation:

Computing is taught weekly and will work in line with our school's 3-D approach (discover, develop deepen). Teachers will use ‘Kapow’ to support their computing lessons, this ensures that there is full curriculum coverage and all lessons will progress within and across year groups. E-safety is a vital part of the computing curriculum, each lesson will have e-safety at the heart. Through this and bespoke  e-safety lessons, we ensure that children are safe when using technology.

E-Safety

Pupils in our school use the Internet on a regular basis as part of their everyday learning. Technology enhances learning and we want to ensure that our pupils get the most from it by encouraging responsible and appropriate online behaviour.  In school, we use a filtering system to prevent children accessing inappropriate sites. We also have regular 'e-safety' activities across the year to remind children of the importance of keeping themselves safe online. At home, sometimes children can be given unsupervised access to the Internet. This potentially allows them to access all kinds of society (both good and bad) and bring it into their homes. We have previously hosted an E-safety evening for parents/carers working with the education safeguarding lead for Peterborough. This evening discussed a wide range of issues and measures that parents and school can do to safeguard the children when they are online.
